The Winning Ways Team
Winning Ways, Inc. was founded in 1992 in Orlando, Florida by Barry Mestel. In those early days, Coach Kane helped guide and direct the growth of Winning Ways with Coach Mestel. "Our Goals Reach Much Higher Than 10 Feet” has been both the slogan and vision for Winning Ways. We focus on taking student athlete's to the next level, both on the court and in the classroom. Coaching people to optimize their talent as individuals and as a team is paramount to the goals and vision of Winning Ways. Winning Ways focuses on the fundamentals of basketball while stressing the fundamentals of life. Tom Kane is President/CEO of Winning Ways East and Winning Ways of Southwest Florida. Tom attended East Stroudsburg University, majoring in physical education. His 18 years in basketball combined with his business experience prompted the vision of Winning Ways Basketball in SWFLA and Pa.
Julie Lanzillo - Vice President of Winning Ways East, Inc. Julie's entrepreneurial spirit and interest in the sports business began at the age of 14, when she began promoting sports memorabilia shows in North Carolina in 1983, handling all negotiations with facilities, exhibitors and sports personalities. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1987-1991, where she received her B.A. in Psychology. In the fall of 1990, after sending out over 600 unsolicited resumes, she received an offer to serve as an intern with SportSource, Inc., a sports publishing and baseball statistical agency in St. Petersburg, Florida. Upon returning to North Carolina in the Fall of 1991, Lanzillo joined the editorial staff of Baseball America magazine in Durham, North Carolina as an assistant editor. She was recruited back to Florida to work for the Baseball Bluebook in 1992 as the Executive Editor. After two years in that role, she moved to the Philadelphia area to be near family, and start her own sports publishing and marketing venture in 1994. She received her master's degre in Sport & Recreation Aministration from Temple University in 2003 and is currently pursuing her doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University.
Zoran had a long successful Professional Basketball career in Europe, following a stellar career in the NCAA. Zoran graduated from Valparaiso University where he led his team to 3 NCAA Tournament appearances. During that time, Valparaiso was considered a Cinderella team making it all the way to the Sweet 16. At 6'11" Zoran was voted All Conference multiple years and led the league in blocked shots. Shortly after graduation Zoran was invited to several NBA camps. Zoran decided to return home to Europe where he played in the top Professional Leagues. Zoran has played in China, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Germany, France and Greece. As you can see, Zoran has seen the world! As a young basketball player Zoran won numerous Croatian and European Championships playing for the Croatian National team. Zoran brings to Winning Ways an incredible wealth of experience and knowledge. Zoran's focus on fundamentals is a true asset in taking his skills on the court and teaching them now as a Coach.
Kathy brings a wealth of experience in the game of basketball to Winning Ways. Coach Drysdale is the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Penn State, Abington Campus. A former four year letter winner at Penn State-University Park, Kathy led her team to great heights, becoming the first women’s basketball team to be ranked #1 in the country. A 1,000 point scorer, Kathy continued her basketball playing career in Germany in 1992. She has coached at Holy Family University (Phila.), Harriton High School and for the AAU Philadelphia Comets. She also spent 13 years working for the Philadelphia 76ers organization, most recently as Director of Basketball Game Operations.
Brook Kohlheim - Player Training and Development Coach Kohlheim is currently the Head Coach of the Women's Basketball Program at Bishop Verot High School. Last season, she was the assistant coach under Elmer Tremont at Fort Myers High School. She is currently a member of the Women's Basketball Coaching Association. Kohlheim is a 2001 graduate of Bishop Verot High School. She played collegiate basketball at Florida Southern College where she was a four-year starter under Coach Diane Foli. She graduated in 2005 with a B.A. in History and studied abroad in Costa Rica. She currently teaches U.S. History in the Bishop Verot Social Studies Department.
Alexa Kane - Player Training and Development Graduating in May 2008 with a degree in Psychology from the University of Tampa, Alexa was the Captain of the Women's Basketball Team from 2006 to 2008. She led the Spartans to three consecutive NCAA regional appearances. In addition she was named Most Valuable Player in the 2007 SSC Conference Tournament and led the conference in total assists with a average of 4.2 assists per game. Alexa was also voted All Conference Second Team. In addition to working with Winning Ways, she will be attending graduate school obtaining a degree in Sports Psychology.
Alex Kwiecinska - Consultant to Winning Ways Player Training and Development Alex brings an immense amount of knowledge to the game due to her playing, coaching, and directing experience. As a player she began her college career at Colby (KS) Community College. She then transferred, and continued playing at Central Florida Community College in Ocala, FL where she earned an Associates in Arts degree. Alex then went on to play her final two seasons at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers, FL, and assisted her team to a 60-11 record over the combined two seasons. In her final season she helped the Eagles qualify for the national tournament where they advanced to the semi finals. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. Alex returned to Central Florida Community College where she began her coaching career. She helped lead the Patriots in becoming the Mid-Florida Conference Champs and appearing in the Region VIII Tournament for the 2006-2007 season.
Sam L Sam is a previous High School Basketball Coach at Lake Howell High School where he worked with University of Florida standouts Nick Calathus and Chandler Parsons. Sam is a graduate of the National Personal Training Institute and a member of the American Fitness Professional Association. Sam has work and helped hundreds of athlete's get to the next level in their game, including over 20 NCAA Division 1 basketball players. Sam has been on the Winning Ways Team since 2000 and brings a wealth of knowledgeand expertise to our team. With Sam's and our entire team's input and direction, Winning Ways has develop a complete strength, conditioning and SAQ program for the player that wants to take their game to the next level!
Chelsea Dermyer - Coach, Player Development Winning Ways is very excited about a quality player like Chelsea joing our team. Chelsea is coaching one of our High School Travel Teams and will be working camps this summer with the team. Chelsea qualifications speak for themselves: 2007-08: Earned Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team honors ... Started all 31 games ... Averaged 35.7 minutes, 11.1 points and 4.9 assists ... Averaged 11.6 in conference play ... Led the team in assists 23 times ... Finished the season ranked 1st in assists and assist/TO ratio, 2nd in 3-pt Pct and minutes and 7th in FT Pct. in the A-Sun Conference ... Scored nine points, grabbed six boards and registered four assists in a game-high 34 minutes vs. No. 19 Florida St. ... Named A-Sun Player of the Week (3/3/08) ... Named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun (3/4/08) ... Nearly recorded a triple-double vs. NJIT in the first round of the Nat’l Independent Tournament, by finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists (3/6/08) ... Finished with 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds in the championship game of the Nat’l Independent Tourney vs. CSU Bakersfield (3/8/08) ... Posted 18 points and five assists vs. USF in the 1st Rd. of the WNIT (3/21/08)... Finished with 10 points andsix rebounds in 40 minutes of action at Florida in the 2nd Rd. of the WNIT (3/24/08)
